Orange Squad Edges Black Squad at Annual Scrimmage

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team opened its season on Wednesday night inside Gill Coliseum for its annual Orange & Black Scrimmage. The Orange team, coached by assistant Ian Miller, edged out the Black Squad, coached by assistant Taylor Meeks, by a final score of 35-32 after a 17-bout marathon inside of Gill.
Rodney Williams won the first bout of the night over Colton Beisley in a 5-3 decision putting the Orange team up 3-0 early on in the night. Redshirt senior All-American Ronnie Bresser responded with a 16-8 major decision over Brandon Kaylor putting the Black squad on top temporarily, 4-3.
The next bout featured redshirt sophomore Devan Turner who used a 16-0 technical fall over freshman Josh Tabb to regain the lead for the Orange squad, 8-4. The score was knotted up thanks to redshirt senior Kegan Calkins who earned a major decision over Haidon Allen, 12-4.
Redshirt freshman Grant Willits picked up a hard fought victory over Conner Noonen in the fifth bout of the night, a 6-2 decision. Willits' victory broke the tie putting Orange on top of Black, 11-8.
The Orange squad continued to add to their lead in the next match where freshman Riley Gurr won by decision 6-2 for another three team points for Orange. Josh Reyes had the first pin of the night in the eight bout over Michael Murphy propelling the Orange Team to a 20-11 lead.
Sophomore Hunter Willits turned things around for the Black team in the next bout getting a technical fall over Drake McKee, 16-1, pulling his squad within 20-16. In the 10th bout of the night Aaron Olmos tied things up again with a 20-6 major decision over Brett Bell, tying the match at 20-20.
Alex Rich picked up an 11-5 decision in his hometown over newcomer Steven Shelofsky putting the Orange squad up once again over the Black squad, 23-20. Much like the rest of the evening, the next bout once again tied the team score up following a 5-3 decision for Colt Doyle over Joe DeMatteo.
Freshman J.J. Dixon impressed in his debut with a 5-3 decision over Collbran Meeker putting Orange back on top once again, 29-23. Redshirt senior, and reigning Pac-12 Champion, Corey Griego picked up a fall in the second straight Orange & Black scrimmage over Adam Rateb once again tying the team race up at 29-29.
In the lone heavyweight battle of the night that featured two freshman it was Jamarcus Grant who came out on top after pinning Hayden Still. Grant put the Orange team up for good with his win.
In the final match of the night freshman Jackson McKinney won by decision 10-5 over Colton Beisley.
