Garcia and Weeks are juniors on the softball team
For the weeks leading up to the regular season, fans will get a chance to learn about every member of the 2017-18 Oregon State softball team.
This week, we meet up with Jessica Garcia and Shelby Weeks in their third season for Oregon State. Garcia is an outfielder from Hughson, Calif., and Weeks is an outfielder from Tracy, Calif.
Why did you choose Oregon State?
Jessica Garcia: I chose Oregon State because ever since I was little I wanted to play in the Pac-12 and compete at the highest level.
Shelby Weeks: Because of THE Laura Berg.
What do you enjoy about your major?
JG (Education): (No answer)
SW (HDFS): I enjoy learning about stereotypes and social interactions.
What do you like most about playing softball?
JG: I enjoy how competitive it is and the intensity it brings.
SW: Fail -> Learn -> Success
What is your favorite thing about playing for Coach Berg?
JG: She wants everyone to succeed and always holds us to the highest standard. She knows our potential and will push us to be the best athlete we can be.
SW: We have the same mentality.
What does your uniform number mean to you?
JG (3): Growing up I always had the number 00, but that number is retired here. So I decided to go with 3 because I wore that number all through high school.
SW (20): It's my mom's favorite number and it has been my number throughout my whole childhood.
What are the team goals for this season?
JG: Finish top three in the Pac-12 and go from there.
SW: To play how we are capable of and expect nothing less.
What is your personal goal for the season?
JG: Be the spark plug.
SW: Become an All-American. Go big or go home, am I right?
What athlete did you idolize growing up and why?
JG: (No answer)
SW: Never had one.
What age did you know you wanted to play softball in college and what made you realize that?
JG: I knew that I wanted to play at the age of nine or so, because that's when I first started playing travel ball.
SW: When colleges started looking at me, which was probably my freshman year of high school.
What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
JG: I like a variety of music, so it just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
SW: Anything 90's/00's R&B or hip-hop
Do you have any pregame rituals or traditions?
JG: If there's something that works for me one day, I will carry that over to the next day.
SW: Not too superstitious, I just listen to music to get pumped up.
What current show could you see yourself being a part of?
JG: Friends.
SW: Impractical Jokers.
What is the best thing about living in Corvallis?
JG: How small the town is and how beautiful it gets during the fall.
SW: The scenery.
What is your biggest phobia?
JG: Being kidnapped.
SW: Injections.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
JG: Hanging out with my roommate, watching Netflix, shopping and sleeping.
SW: Netflix or playing games on my phone.
What is your favorite place on campus to hang out?
JG: Michelle's house.
SW: My house with my roommates.
