Beavers Lose A Heartbreaker In Tempe
January 13, 2018 | Men's Basketball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Oregon State played well on the road for the second straight game but couldn't hang on in a 77-75 loss to No. 11 Arizona State on Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
Tres Tinkle recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Oregon State. Drew Eubanks and Ethan Thompson added 11 points apiece. Thompson also had a career-high seven assists.
The Beavers (10-7, 2-3 Pac-12) took control with a 10-0 run early in the second half to take a 45-35 lead on a pair of free throws by Tinkle with 16:48 left. Oregon State took its biggest lead, 57-44, when Thompson sank a 3-pointer with 11:32 left.
Shannon Evans made two free throws and a driving layup, then capped it with a 3-pointer in a 10-0 surge that put Arizona State ahead 73-68 with 1:07 remaining. Oregon State cut it to 75-73 on a triple by Thompson Jr. with 32 seconds left.
Remy Martin made one of two free throws to put ASU ahead 76-73 with 20.3 seconds left but a driving layup by Thompson Jr. sliced the lead to 76-75 with seven seconds to play. Evans made one of two free throws to give the Beavers a chance but a 3-pointer by Tinkle was off the mark.
"Our deal was to go inside out and attack off the dribble," Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "They did a nice job of doubling Drew (Eubanks) though. The thing that was frustrating was we couldn't change the way we were playing once they brought the pressure. That took us out of our offense and ultimately hurt us on both ends."
Evans scored all of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Arizona State. Kodi Justice added 14 points and Martin finished with 12 points.
Oregon State held halftime leads against two ranked Arizona teams on the road trip, 22-21 against No. 17 Arizona and 34-33 against No. 11 Arizona State.
The Beavers return to Gill Coliseum to face UCLA at 8 p.m. on Thursday. The game will be televised nationally on FS1.
