Beavers Finish 20th at IRA Championships

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Oregon State men's rowing team completed their season at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships, Sunday on Lake Natoma.
"Today was a great day, we won our Varsity 8 final and took second in the Third Varsity," said head coach Gabe Winkler. "The guys really came together and rebounded after a tough day yesterday."
The Varsity 8 crewed by Spencer Smith, Frank Horpel, Jesse Maritz, Rhys Daniel, Glenn Miller, Nathan Smith, Baxter Call and Neall Koetje, and coxed by Ben Garrison, finished first in the Fourth Final and 20th overall. The V8 covered the 2,000-meter course in 5-minutes, 48.737-seconds, finishing more than two-seconds ahead of second place Hobart, 5:50.073.
"I am proud of the guys and how hard they have worked this year. It was a good ending day to a tough regatta."
Oregon State's Third Varsity 8 powered by Alex Carlton, Jacob Hart, Will Johnson, Zach Fried, Grant Van Kampen, Roman Pjajka, Torin Kingshill, and Brad Vomocil, and directed by Ercoli Crugnale, made a move in the final 500 meters to cross the finish in 5:57.210, edging out third place George Washington, 5:57.447. The 3V8's second place finish in the Third Final left it 14th overall.
The Beavers' Second Varsity 8 clocked a time of 6:02.327 to finished third in the Fourth Final and 21st overall.
OSU's Varsity 4+ also raced to a third place finish in the Third Final and 15th overall. The V4+ covered the course in 6:42.393, more than a second ahead of Columbia, which clocked a time of 6:43.696.
Seniors Frank Horpel (V8), Liam Kucey (2V8), Torin Kingshill (3V8), Nathan Smith (V8), Spencer Smith (V8), Heather Thompson (2V8), Grant Van Kampen (3V8), and Ian Wright (2V8) all raced their final race for the Beavers on Sunday.
"The eight seniors that are graduating this year worked really hard and I am sad to see them go."
