CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State redshirt junior Jake Thompson has been named a First-Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Friday.
Â
Thompson, an economics major who hails from Florence, Ore., is the first Oregon State player to be named an Academic All-American since Mitch Canham in 2007. Thompson was also named a Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team selection on Tuesday. Then, on Thursday, he was named to the Pac-12's First Team after going 12-0 with a 1.31 earned run average during the regular season.
Â
Thompson's 12 wins leads the nation. He is the only Pac-12 Conference student-athlete on the First Team – and one of two overall.
Â
To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.3 grade point average – Thompson's is 3.60 – and be a starter or significant reserve. They may also not be a first-year student at their respective schools.
Â
Thompson is the sixth Oregon State baseball player to be named an Academic All-American. He follows Ken Bowen (1986 and 1987), Bryan Ganter (1986 and 1987), Mason Smith (1994), Ben Bertrand (1998) and Canham (2007). It comes on the heels of the announcement of a school-record 16 players named Pac-12 All-Academic on Tuesday. That came after the 2016 team set the previous record with 11 selections.
