The left-hander owns the nation's lowest ERA this season at 0.71
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State junior Luke Heimlich has been named the Pac-12 Conference's Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The honor, coming on the heels of Heimlich's eight shutout innings over California on Friday, is the third of the season for the left-hander. He's the first Oregon State pitcher to be honored three times in a season since Jace Fry in 2014.
Overall, Heimlich has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week four times in his career, joining OSU pitchers Andrew Checketts (eight), Scott Christman (six), Chris Pine (five), Fry (four) and Andrew Moore (four) with at least four such honors in their career.
Heimlich, a speech communication major, struck out a career-best 12 batters against Cal, which came into this past weekend's series tied for second in the conference with a .287 batting average. He allowed seven hits, but held the Golden Bears to an 0-for-3 line with runners in scoring position.
The win Friday pushed his season record to 7-1 on the year, and his 0.71 earned run average is the lowest in the nation. He is the only pitcher with a qualifying number of innings to have a sub-1.00 ERA.
Also On Monday
Also announced on Monday is that right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson is the NCBWA's National Pitcher of the Month for April. He was 4-0 with a 0.71 ERA in five starts during the month.
