GET TO KNOW IAN WRIGHT
Get to know Ian Wright, a senior, from San Juan Capistrano, Calif., majoring in psychology.
Do you have a specific pre-race ritual?
My pre-race ritual is to make sure I get my food in and hydrate enough. Then I put my music on and get in the zone on the van ride there. Once we get there, we start to rig boats and I imagine how the race is going to go down.
What has been your favorite moment as an OSU athlete?
My favorite moment would have to be this past weekend at the Stanford Invite. We beat Stanford by a second and they protested the win, so we had to re-row against them the next day. The next day we were so mad that we had to re-race them, and we destroyed them the second time by 8-seconds.
If you had a pump-up song, what would it be?
My pump-up song would have to be "When a Fire Starts to Burn" by Disclosure, it's just so funky and always gets me ready to go.
If you could play a different college sport at Oregon State, what would it be and why?
If I could play a different college sport, I would definitely play basketball. That's the sport I've played my whole life and in high school, and I still love playing pick up at Dixon.
What do you like best about Corvallis?
I like that Corvallis has so much to do. You can go hiking in the hills, exploring through the forest, chill at a bar, float down the Willamette, really anything.
How would you describe your teammates?
I would describe my teammates as guys that know how to have fun, but when it's time to get down to business, we grind. They are all hard-working dudes that I know won't ever give up in a race.
How would you describe the coaching staff?
I would describe our coaches as just one of us. They know how to keep things fun, but when we need to get things done, they make sure to push us to our limits.
Where are you most excited to race at?
I'm most excited to race at the Windermere Cup up in Seattle on May 6th. That's one of the most iconic races that I picture when I think of rowing. I haven't been yet, but it looks really cool rowing through the "cut," with all the fans lined up along the course, screaming their lungs out.
What is your major? Why did you choose your major?
My major is psychology. I chose it because my mom is an AP Psych teacher in high school. She's taught me different psych concepts throughout my life, and I just find any subject of psychology very deep and interesting.
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
I'd say the funniest thing about studying psychology is that I have been the only guy in my psych class more than once.
If you could vacation anywhere where would it be? Why?
If I could vacation anywhere I'd want to go to Fiji, because it looks like the most peaceful place ever. I would be in the warm water all day, go diving, watch world class surfing, just be in absolute paradise.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself living in Laguna Beach in my mansion with my wife and two kids, working from home and going to the beach everyday once I get my work done.
If you were a superhero what super power would you want? Why?
I'd want to have super-strength so I could just destroy everyone at rowing.
