Second Varsity 8 Tops Stanford
April 15, 2017 | Men's Rowing
Redwood Shores, Calif. – The Oregon State Men's Second Varsity 8 excelled this weekend beating Stanford twice at the Stanford Invitational.
"This weekend really tested us," said head coach Gabe Winkler. "All of the boats performed well. The weekend was highlighted by a re-row between our Second Varsity 8 and Stanford. The guys stepped up to the challenge and dominated the dual. It's hard to beat Stanford but when you do it twice in one weekend, it feels pretty good."
The Beavers Second Varsity 8 and the Cardinals 2V8 had a close race Friday afternoon resulting in a OSU victory with a time of 6-minutes, 12.3-seconds to Stanford's 6:13.4. During the Coxswain and coaches meeting Saturday, Stanford filed a protest which resulted in a re-race. The 2V8 beat Stanford in the re-race powering through the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:03.8 while the Cardinal posted a time of 6:11.7.
"There is a lot of speed in all the boats and things are going well into the second half of the season."
The Orange and Black started the weekend off against Stanford Friday with the 2V8 and Third Varsity 8 both capturing wins. The Varsity 8 concluded Friday afternoon in a tight race with Stanford, the Beavers posted a time of 6:04.4 to Stanford's 6:01.2.
OSU swept Santa Clara Saturday morning with the 3V8 clocking a time of 6:12.2, the 2V8 posted a time of 6:04.1. The Beavers V8 finished the morning covering the course in 5:55.4. Saturday afternoon ended with Oregon State taking on Wisconsin.
In addition to the Beavers taking on Stanford, Santa Clara and Wisconsin, two Oregon State boats headed south to the Covered Bridge Regatta. Oregon State took second in both the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4+ finals behind Oregon.
