Wiese is one of 14 players in history to make All-Pac-12 four times
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sydney Wiese and Marie Gulich both made the Pac-12 First Team, head coach Scott Rueck was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year and Gabriella Hanson was tabbed Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday morning. Mikayla Pivec was named to the All-Freshman Team and Breanna Brown was tabbed as a Defensive Honorable Mention.
With the honor, Wiese becomes one of 14 players in Pac-12 history, and the second Oregon State player (Tonja Kostic) to ever earn All-Pac-12 recognition all four years of their career. The senior, who has already been named to the watch lists for the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Wade Trophy, Ann Meyers Drysdale Award and Lieberman Award, is the Pac-12's career record holder for 3-pointers. The senior is already in the top-seven in Oregon State history in career points, and holds the school record for career assists. Wiese leads the Beavers with 15.4 points per game, as is among the top four in the nation in 3-point percentage.
Hanson is known as one of the best defensive players in the nation. The senior is the only player in the country to successfully slow down Washington standout Kelsey Plum, holding her to an 8-for-23 shooting performance in the teams' only meeting of the year. Hanson has played in 110 Oregon State wins, more than any player in program history, and has seen action in 133 games overall, two short of Deven Hunter's program record.
Rueck earns John R. Wooden Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors for the second time, becoming the fifth coach in conference history to win the award more than once. The seventh-year coach is already second on Oregon State's career wins list with 149, and has led Oregon State to three-consecutive Pac-12 regular season titles. Rueck was one of four finalists for Naismith Coach of the Year last season, and finished second to only UConn's Geno Auriemma in the 2016 AP Coach of the Year voting.
Gulich makes the All-Pac-12 team for the first time this year, after being tabbed as a Freshman Honorable Mention two years ago. The junior is averaging just under double-figures in scoring at 9.9 points per game, sits eighth in the Pac-12 in rebounds per game (7.9) and is seventh in blocks per game (1.70). Overall, Gulich has five double-doubles this season, and has scored in double-figures 12 times. She is the only Oregon State player to play in all 98 games over the last three seasons, and scored the game-winning basket in the Beavers' win over Stanford on Friday.
Pivec is Oregon State's 13th ever All-Freshman selection, and its first since Wiese in 2014. The Lynnwood, Wash, native has started the last 21 games for Oregon State, and is averaging 6.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season. Pivec sits third on the team in both assists and steals, with 66 and 24, respectively. She has been in double-figures seven times this season, and earned Play4Kay Shootout All-Tournament honors earlier this year.
Brown has established herself as one of the top shot-blockers in the conference. The redshirt-junior is sixth in the Pac-12 with 52 rejections this year, including some emphatic blocks in big moments. Brown has also proven to be a force on the glass, pulling down an average of 5.7 rebounds per game. The center has notched the first three double-doubles of her career this season.
Oregon State will head to the Pac-12 Tournament this week, after locking down the regular season title outright on Sunday. The Beavers will open the event at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, as they take on the winner of Thursday's game between USC and California.
