Pivec and Gulich post double-doubles for Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's basketball opened the season with a 65-55 win over North Dakota Friday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
"It was great to be back out there," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "It was a fun atmosphere in Gill. This was a challenging game, which we anticipated. North Dakota gave a great effort today, and it demanded a great effort from us to win this game. Our defense really set the tone down the stretch, and we got better as the game went. This is a great start for us – this was a test we can learn from and grow from."
Sophomore Mikayla Pivec tallied her first career double-double, going for 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting to go with 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Senior Marie Gulich also netted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The center also blocked seven shots, tied for the ninth-best single-game total in program history.
Junior's Katie McWilliams and Taylor Kalmer both finished in double-figures. McWilliams tallied 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor, while Kalmer scored all 10 of her points in the first quarter.
As a team, the Beavers out-scored the Fighting Hawks 38-8 in the paint and shot 45.9 percent from the floor, compared to 29.5 percent for North Dakota. With the win, Oregon State has now won 20-straight season-openers.
North Dakota jumped out to an early lead, as the Fighting Hawks took a 9-6 edge to the first media timeout. The Beavers came roaring back, scoring 12 unanswered points to send Oregon State to the second quarter up 18-12.
The Fighting Hawks battled on in the second frame, taking the lead three minutes into the period. The teams traded punches for the majority of the quarter, and the two sides headed to the break level at 29.
Oregon State retook the lead to start the second half, as Gulich scored the team's first seven points of the half as part of a 10-2 Beaver run. The Beavers took a nine-point lead mid-way through the third quarter. North Dakota cut the edge to one late in the period, before Oregon State headed to the closing frame up 48-45.
The Beavers made a push in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to double-figures before taking the win by 10.
Oregon State will play the second game of its season-opening three-game homestand on Wednesday, when the Beavers host Utah Valley.
