Beavers start new year
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's basketball team returned to the court Wednesday, as the Beavers hosted their first practice of the 2017-18 season.
Â
Oregon State enters the year with a young squad, with Marie Gulich serving as the team's only senior. The 6-foot-5 center is an All-Pac-12 selection, and finished second on the team in scoring last season. She is the only Oregon State player to appearing in all 104 games over the last three seasons, and is closing in on 100 career blocks.
Â
The Beavers back-court is headlined by sophomore Mikayla Pivec, who earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors after averaging 7.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season. She will be joined by juniors Katie McWilliams and Taylor Kalmer. McWilliams has made 20 career starts, and highlighted her 2016-17 season with a 29-point outing in the season-opener vs. Lamar. Kalmer played some of her best collegiate basketball at the end of her sophomore year, including a number of big performances in the Pac-12 Tournament. Sharp-shooter Kat Tudor enters her second campaign at Oregon State. She was a 41.2 percent 3-point shooter last season.
Â
Freshman Aleah Goodman and sophomore Destiny Slocum join the OSU guards as newcomers this season. Goodman led La Salle to an Oregon State title last season, while Slocum earned National Freshman of the Year honors at Maryland last season, before transferring to Oregon State.
Â
In the front-court, sophomores Madison Washington and Janessa Thropay will look to continue building on their debut campaigns. Washington made 18 appearances last season, shooting 47.4 percent from the floor, while Thropay saw the floor in eight contests. Junior Joanna Grymek and freshman Taya Corosdale will also join the team this season. Grymek spent the last two seasons at Seward County Community College, where she was an NJCAA All-American. Corosdale was a Jordan Brand Classic All-American and a two-time King County MVP.
Â
The Beavers are coming off three-straight Pac-12 titles, and four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four showing in 2016. Oregon State has gone 98-24 over the last three campaigns, and has become a fixture in the Top-25, appearing in ever poll since the start of the 2014-15 season.
