What Beaver Women's Basketball Is Saying About Coach Rueck's Extension
October 27, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Check out what players and coaches had to say
Last week, Oregon State announced that head coach Scott Rueck, the most successful coach in program history, had signed an unprecedented extension that will run through the 2026-27 season. With his eighth season at OSU right around the corner, here's a look at what members of the Beaver basketball program had to say about the reigning Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
Â
"I think its unprecedented, but he's earned it because he's been here seven years and he's proven that he genuinely cares about the players and knows what it takes to win," said assistant athletic director for women's basketball Eric Ely, who has been with the team since Rueck took over in 2010. "As an Oregon State alum, he believes in Oregon State and who Oregon State is. From my perspective, Beaver Nation knows what he is all about - what type of coach he is, that he believes in the university and in every single one of the student athletes. He's figured out what it takes to win at the highest level."
Â
Players past and present chimed in on playing for Coach Rueck and his impact on them and the program. First from graduate Sydney Wiese, recently off her rookie season with the Los Angeles Sparks and now playing in Australia for the Townsville Fire.
Â
"Coach Rueck: the man the myth the legend of Oregon State women's basketball," Wiese said. "Through his dedicated leadership, he has set a standard of unrelenting work ethic and has built a championship culture that inspires. The love he has for the fans, the university, his staff, and his players is evident in each moment he has been at the helm, and his legacy will continue on for many years to come."
Â
Followed by current players senior Marie Gülich and sophomore Mikayla Pivec talking about their progression as players and people under coach Rueck.
Â
"It's amazing for him to have the opportunity to be here for so long," Gülich said. "I think Scott is an amazing coach. He has made me a better player, but off the court he has made me a better person. Going forward, I am glad the program will have the opportunity to keep growing under his leadership."
Â
"I really enjoyed playing for him my first year, and I am looking forward to playing this year and onward," Pivec said. "To see how far he has taken this program, all the way to the Final Four and the Sweet Sixteen, shows what kind of impact he has made on the team, the community, and on us as people as well."
Â
Rueck has tried to build his coaching staff and program as a family, and fill the program with staff and players who want that as well.
Â
"The reason I came to work with Scott was because of who he is as a person and his integrity," said associate head coach Jonas Chatterton. "It couldn't have been better since I've been here. Scott is a genuine, authentic, high integrity person. I've enjoyed every part of being a part of this family over the past three years."
Â
Rueck says his vision has been fulfilled within his program and in the community around the team, and that the chance to coach at his alma matter is a "dream scenario". He is also thankful for the support of his vision.
Â
"I 100 percent believe in Oregon State and what we are accomplishing here," Rueck said. "I have seen first-hand what this community has done for these student's lives. That's the core of this entire opportunity. It's an area of the country I know and I love, but what we do here for the students is, in my opinion, second to none.
Â
"I love that the administration has invested in our sport and showed that commitment to me and our program. It is really encouraging and helpful in every way. We're in this together; how great can we become?"
