Madrigal batted .333 with 11 doubles, five triples and one home run in 2016
DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal has been named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America First Team, the publication announced on Monday.
Madrigal, the Pac-12 Conference's Freshman of the Year, batted .333 in his first season with the Beavers. He played in 49 of the team's 54 games, and tied for the club's lead with 65 hits while accumulating 11 doubles, five triples, one home run and 29 runs batted in. He also walked 15 times to just 14 strikeouts – the least among the team's starters – while swiping eight bases.
His honor gives the Beavers at least one Baseball America Freshman All-American in four of the last five years. He joins previous honorees Michael Conforto (2012), Jace Fry (2012), Andrew Moore (2013), KJ Harrison (2015) and Drew Rasmussen (2015).
Madrigal is now on two Freshman All-America teams after being recognized by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball at the conclusion of the regular season. An All-Pac-12 first teamer, he started his career off on the right foot, being named the first Pac-12 Player of the Week in 2016, on Feb. 23.
