Ice, Madrigal Earn Pac-12 Awards; Five Honored
June 02, 2016 | Baseball
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State catcher Logan Ice has been named the Pac-12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Year and second baseman Nick Madrigal was named its Freshman of the Year when season awards were announced on Thursday.
Ice, Madrigal, and sophomores KJ Harrison and Christian Donahue were all named All-Pac-12 First Team, while freshman Bryce Fehmel was named honorable mention. The Pac-12's 11 coaches voted on the honors; they were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Madrigal and Ice were also named to the Pac-12's All-Defensive Team.
Ice is the Beavers' first defensive player of the year since Chris Kunda in 2006. The junior catcher threw out better than 44 percent of runners attempting to steal while committing just one passed ball in 54 games. Offensively, he batted .310, tallying 13 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 39 runs batted in.
The first team honor is the first of Ice's career.
Madrigal continues an Oregon State tradition of strong freshman play. He joins the likes of Michael Conforto (2012), Andrew Moore (2013) and Harrison (2015) to be named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year. Madrigal earned the honor after batting .333 with 11 doubles, five triples, one home run and 29 RBI. He was spectacular defensively, committing five errors in more than 200 chances. He also helped turn 24 double plays this season.
Ice's and Madrigal's honors give the Beavers at least one major Pac-12 award winner in each of the last six seasons, and 10 overall – 33 percent of the Pac-12's total over that stretch. UCLA is second over that stretch with four.
Harrison earned his second consecutive Pac-12 First Team honor. The sophomore first baseman batted .265 with 14 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs and 47 RBI. He led the Pac-12 with 30 RBI during conference play and tied for the league lead with eight home runs.
Donahue made a switch to the outfield during the season and batted .339 with 11 doubles, five triples, one home run and 29 RBI. Donahue led the Beavers with 20 multi-hit games in 2016, including nine of three hits or more. The honor is his first Pac-12 award.
The four first team selections give Oregon State 132 all-time, ranking the Beavers fourth in conference history. They narrowly trail No. 2 USC (134) and No. 3 Arizona State (133).
Fehmel capped his first season in Corvallis with a 19 2/3 inning streak with just one run allowed over his last three outings. During that stretch, which included a complete-game shutout of UCLA, he allowed 11 hits and four walks with 13 strikeouts. He finished his freshman season with a Pac-12 best 10-1 record, 2.31 earned run average and a .222 batting average against.
