Harrison Homers In Civil War Finale
May 16, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – KJ Harrison hit his 10th home run of the season but Oregon State was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 6-3 loss to Oregon Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The game marked the finale of the Civil War series presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores. Oregon (24-22 overall, 12-12 Pac-12 Conference) took the series thanks to a 7-4 win in the opener Friday before the Beavers (30-18, 11-13) evened the series with a 6-3 win Saturday.
Harrison drove a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence in the sixth to cap a three-run inning. The home run was his second of the series and 20th of his career, which puts him just two shy of tying Seth Pietsch (2001-03) for the 10th-most in Oregon State history.
Harrison also has 45 runs batted in on the year, and 105 for his career. He's 25 shy of Shea McFeely (2004-06) and Bob McNair (1978-80), who each tallied 130 during their careers.
Oregon State tallied six hits and five walks off four Oregon pitchers, and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth but was unable to cross the plate against reliever Stephen Nogosek. The righty worked two innings and allowed a hit and two walks for his 12th save of the season.
Matt Mercer started for Oregon and picked up the win to improve to 2-0. He allowed five hits and three runs in six innings.
Jake Thompson took the loss to fall to 3-3. The OSU starter gave up three hits and two runs in five innings.
The Ducks staked themselves to a 5-0 lead after 5 ½ before the Beavers inched themselves to within two. Steven Kwan drove in Oregon State's first run on a groundout, then watched Harrison drive in the team's second and third runs.
The Beavers next hit the road for a three-game series at USC in Los Angeles. The series opens Friday at 7:05 p.m. PT, with game two Saturday at 1:05 p.m. The finale is Sunday at 12:05 p.m. All three games can be seen live on Pac-12 Oregon.
