Beavers Take The Finale, Series Over Stanford
May 01, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – KJ Harrison hit his seventh home run of the season and Bryce Fehmel scattered one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief to send the 10th-ranked Oregon State baseball team to an 11-4 win over Stanford Sunday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The win gave the Beavers a series victory over the Cardinal, Oregon State's sixth straight. OSU won 3-2 on Friday before Stanford took Saturday's game 6-0.
The win capped off a spectacular three-game series, which saw 9,699 fans through the gates at Goss. Sunday's crowd of 3,307 was the second-largest of the season at home, just 12 fans shy of tying the season-high.
The Beavers rapped out 14 hits against six Stanford pitchers Sunday. Harrison, Christian Donahue, Nick Madrigal, Logan Ice and Kyle Nobach all recorded two hits. Of those 14 hits, three went for extra bases, with Donahue doubling and Madrigal tripling in addition to Harrison's round tripper.
That home run highlighted Oregon State's five run first-inning. Madrigal tripled with one down and scored when Ice blooped a single to center. Harrison, the next batter, crushed a 2-1 pitch from Stanford starter Andrew Summerville over the fence in left.
All five runs in the first were charged to Summerville, who was chased after recording just one out. It marked the fifth time during Pac-12 Conference play that the Beavers (28-12 overall, 10-8 Pac-12) chased an opposing starter in the first inning.
Summerville took the loss to drop to 3-2 on the year.
Fehmel came on in relief of starter Jake Thompson in the fifth, and got out of a first and third jam with his first of six strikeouts on the day. The freshman proceeded to limit the Cardinal (20-18, 8-10) to three hits and a run in 4 1/3 innings.
He improved to 8-1 on the year, and is tied for the league lead in victories.
Up 5-3 entering the sixth, OSU scored two on a single by Madrigal and sacrifice fly to center to push the lead to four.
Stanford scored its lone run off Fehmel in the eighth, but the Beavers answered back with four in the bottom half of the inning to go up seven. Billy King drove in two and Trever Morrison singled in a run to cap off Oregon State's offense on the day.
Thompson's start lasted 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits and three runs – all unearned – with three walks and four strikeouts.
Oregon State returns to action Tuesday when hosting Seattle in a non-conference game at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT. Tickets can be purchased by visiting BeaverTickets.com or calling 1-800-GOBEAVS.
