OSU Volleyball Set to Open Spring Schedule
April 27, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team is set to begin its spring schedule in Seattle, Wash. this weekend in the first of three scheduled weekends of competition.
The Beavers are scheduled to play four total matches over its spring slate, beginning this Saturday against Western Washington and Seattle. The Beavers will open their spring slate with a match against Western Washington at 11:30 a.m. PT, and face Seattle at 2 p.m. PT. Both games will be played at Seattle's Connolly Arena.
“We're very excited to begin our spring competition,” Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. “This is an opportunity for our players to forge their role for the 2016 season. With some of our hitters being out, it gives other hitters an opportunity to rise to the occasion. Our staff will have an opportunity to look at all of the players and see who can add that termination factor that we need on the outside and in the middle to be successful in fall 2016.”
Following those two matches, Oregon State will play two matches on two seperate weekends against Oregon. The Beavers will take on the Ducks in Eugene, Ore. at 10 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 14, and will host Oregon at 10 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 21. Additional spring matches may be announced at a later date.
“It's a great, competitive opportunity for freshmen to earn a spot in the spring and have matches that don't impact them the way those in the season do,” Oregon State associate head coach Mark Barnard said. “Your first year coming in can be difficult, but it's still a competitive environment that we have, so they will have opportunity based upon how they have progressed since then and perform in the spring.”
The Oregon State volleyball team returns 12 athletes from last year's squad, including eight with 10 or more starts in 2015. The 2016 spring roster includes five rising seniors (defensive specialist/libero Rachel Buehner; middle blocker Jessi Seumalo and hitters Katelyn Driscoll, Lila Toner and Emilie Wilmes), two rising juniors (hitter Mary-Kate Marshall and setter Sam Rouleau) and six rising sophomores (middle blockers Kory Cheshire, Maddy Gravley and Daniela Vargas; defensive specialist/libero Kayla Ellis; hitter/setter McKenna Hollingsworth and hitter Lanesha Reagan).
