Beavers Race to Second in Seattle
April 10, 2016 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 20 Oregon State men's crew raced as a split squad Saturday with three crews taking on crews from University of Washington and Washington State in Seattle, while two other boats rowed at the Covered Bridge Regatta at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore.
OSU's Varsity 8 raced its way to a second place finish to the second-ranked crew in the nation with a time of 6-minutes, 6.621-seconds. The Beavers' Junior Varsity 8 out-dueled the Washington State Varsity crew finishing in second, nearly eight seconds ahead of the Cougars with a time of 6:10.875.
Oregon State's Freshman 8 finished third behind UW's Third Varsity 8 and F8. However, OSU's F8 came in more than 25 seconds ahead of Washington State with a time of6:08.302.
“It was a great day of racing with perfect weather and perfect conditions,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The guys raced pretty well but it's just hard to match the power of Washington. We did get the better of Washington State's Varsity 8 in our JV boat and that was a great race.”
The Beavers finish gold in three races at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. The Novice 4 took first in both of the races on Saturday outracing Western Washington by almost 9 seconds. The V8 took the top spot on Saturday's morning race and second in the afternoon race beating third-place Oregon by almost 15 seconds.
“I'm really proud the novice guys that went down to the Covered Bridge and won in the Coxed Four. That was really cool for them in their first race ever.”
Oregon State is back in action next weekend, April 16-17, at the Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores, Calif.
“Next week we've got four big races ahead of us and the results here at UW are something for us to build off of.”
