
Beavers Sweep Sunday Racing at Stanford Invite

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 19 Oregon State men's rowing team finished the weekend with a Sunday sweep over Hobart and UC Irvine at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif.
Oregon State's Varsity 8 crew recorded a pair of wins over the weekend at Redwood Shores defeating University of San Diego and Hobart College. The Beavers' first race Saturday resulted in a solid win as the V8 covered the course in a time of 5-minutes, 57.1-seconds, coming in 13 seconds ahead of the Toreros. Sunday morning, the Beavers were back in the winner's circle with a strong sprint to the finish with a time of 5:49.3, four seconds ahead of Hobart. Saturday afternoon, the V8 crew fell short against in a tough race against Wisconsin 5:47.1-5:51.6.
“This weekend was a tough test,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “The guys showed their guts in every race. The two wins for the Varsity were great to watch. This morning's (Sunday) race against Hobart was not one to wager your mortgage on. It was nearly level with 600-meters to go and the guys answered with a great sprint.”
The Beavers' Junior Varsity 8 registered its first win of the weekend Sunday against Hobart coming out just a few seconds ahead at the finish, 5:55.2-5:58.6. The JV8 came up just short against California's Freshman 8 in Saturday morning racing and was also beaten by Wisconsin in the afternoon.
“With all of the boats coming out of the weekend with some wins gives us some great momentum getting closer to the PAC-12's.”
Oregon State's Freshman 8 posted two wins over the weekend getting on the board Saturday morning with a convincing 11-second win over USD with a time of 6:10.0. Sunday, the Beavers frosh crew boatraced a crew from UC Irvine finishing with an impressive time of 6:00.5, 40-seconds ahead of the Anteaters. The OSU rookies fell to Wisconsin Saturday as well.
All three of OSU's crews were defeated by California Friday afternoon as the weekend's racing began.
OSU's men's crew returns to the water its final home race of the year at Lake Vancouver in Washington, Saturday, April 23 against Gonzaga and University of Victoria.
