Rasmussen, Harrison Pace Beavers Over ASU
March 19, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Drew Rasmussen struck out eight and KJ Harrison hit his first home run of the season as the fourth-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated visiting Arizona State, 3-2, Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The game marked the Pac-12 opener for both teams. The Beavers improved to 13-2 on the year, while Arizona State, which saw its eight-game win streak snapped, dropped to 13-4 in 2016.
Harrison unloaded a 3-2 pitch from ASU starter Seth Martinez over the fence in left to put the Beavers up 2-0 in the fourth. The sophomore battled back from an 0-2 count to plate himself and junior Logan Ice, who had walked to open the inning.
Ice extended his season-long hit streak to six games with a first-inning double.
Harrison's home run backed up a solid start from Rasmussen, who worked 8 1/3 innings in his fifth appearance of the season. He allowed five hits and two runs – a bloop single in the seventh and a solo home run by Colby Woodmansee in the ninth.
The reigning Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, Rasmussen has now allowed just 11 hits and four runs with 27 strikeouts over his last 21 1/3 innings.
He picked up the win on Friday, improving to 4-0 this season.
Nick Madrigal picked up the game winner with an RBI single in the seventh, pushing his hit streak to nine games in the process.
Martinez was charged with the loss after allowing six hits and three runs in 6 2/3 innings. He dropped to 3-1 on the year.
Max Engelbrekt picked up the final two outs of the game for his seventh save of the season.
The teams continue the series Saturday with a 1:35 p.m. PT first pitch at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The ticket office at Goss Stadium will open two hours prior to first pitch. Student tickets will also be distributed at Gate 6 starting two hours before first pitch.
