STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 7/7 Oregon State women's basketball team was defeated by No. 13/13 Stanford 76-54 Friday evening at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
“I was really impressed by Stanford tonight, they played a great game,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “They executed their scheme well, and shot the ball at an unbelievable rate. You have to take this for what it is. The thing that I know about our team is that this group handles adversity well. We're a mature team, and we're going to learn and get better from tonight.”
The defeat snapped Oregon State's 14-game winning streak, which dated back to Jan. 8. Stanford's 74 points are the most allowed by the Beavers this season, and the Cardinal became just the third team to out-rebound the Beavers on the year.
Senior Ruth Hamblin led the Oregon State effort, scoring 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting. She also blocked two shots to move within 14 rejections of the Pac-12 career record. Junior Sydney Wiese finished the evening with seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore Marie Gulich scored seven points, while seniors Samantha Siegner and Deven Hunter, and junior Gabriella Hanson tallied five points apiece.
Oregon State used 3-pointers from Hanson and Hunter to jump out to an early 10-4 lead, but Stanford would battle back to level the score at 10. The two sides would trade punches for the remainder of the opening frame, with the Cardinal holding a narrow 21-19 edge after the first 10 minutes of play.
Stanford controlled the second quarter, taking a 41-27 advantage into the intermission. The Cardinal would hold the advantage from there, taking the win by 22.
The Beavers will head to Berkeley Sunday for a matinee matchup with California at 11 a.m. Oregon State would capture a share of the Pac-12 title with a win over the Golden Bears, combined with a UCLA win over Arizona State (also 11 a.m. on Sunday).
