February 16, 2016 | Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State sophomore KJ Harrison has been named to the initial Watch List for the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced on Tuesday.
Harrison is one of 50 players on the initial watch list for the award, which is given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Harrison is one of six players from the Pac-12 Conference. He's also one of 10 sophomores from across the country on the watch list.
The Kailua, Hawaii native was named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year in 2015 after batting .309 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and a league-leading 60 runs batted in. The pre-business major was also a consensus Freshman All-American.
USA Baseball will release a midseason watch list in April, and will announce semifinalists for the honor in June. The finalists will be announced prior to the College World Series with the 2016 trophy presentation in late June.
Past winners include Kris Bryant (2013), Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Alex Gordon (2005). Former Beaver Michael Conforto, now playing for the New York Mets, was a finalist in 2013.
OSU opens the 2016 season Friday against Ball State in Surprise, Ariz. The matchup opens an 11-game trip for the Beavers to open the year, with the first eight slated for Arizona and the final three for San Diego, Calif. The 2016 home opener is March 11 against San Francisco.
