February 10, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Senior Jamie Weisner has been named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday. The guard is one of 30 players to make the watch list, which features five Pac-12 players.
The Naismith trophy is awarded annually to the players of the year in women's and men's college basketball. The award's committee will narrow the field to 10 semifinalists on March 3, before announcing the four finalists on March 18.
Weisner, a Kinesiology major, has proven herself to be among the nation's elite scorers, averaging 17.0 points per game, good for fourth in the Pac-12. The senior is shooting 49.4 percent from the floor, good for fifth in the conference and the best percentage for any guard in the Pac-12. She is also among the nation's leaders in 3-point percentage, sitting fifth in the conference and 14th in the nation at 43.6 percent.
Weisner has scored in double-figures 19 times in 22 appearances this season, including six 20-point games. She has saved her best performances for the big games, scoring 25 points on 9-for-10 shooting against No. 8 Arizona State, and recording 12 points in the fourth quarter on her way to an 18-point outing against No. 11 Stanford.
The Clarkston, Wash. native scored her 1,500th career point on Friday, becoming the seventh Beaver and the 61st Pac-12 player in history to reach that landmark. She is also among the conference's career leaders in free-throw percentage (82.8) and 3-point percentage (40.6). Weisner earned Oregon State's first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor this week.
Oregon State was one of three teams to place three players on the Naismith Early Season Watch List (Weisner, Ruth Hamblin, Sydney Wiese), which was released on Dec. 9. The Beavers are currently ranked No. 8 in both polls, and are tied with Arizona State for first place in the Pac-12 with a conference record of 11-1 (20-3 overall). OSU has won 10-straight games, and leads the nation in field goal percentage defense and defensive rebounds.
The Beavers will tip-off a four-game homestand on Friday, when they play host to Colorado. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The contest will be Oregon State's DAM Cancer pink game.
