Thompson Jr. Scores 20 Points In Return
December 01, 2016 | Men's Basketball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 20 points in his return to the lineup but Oregon State fell 74-57 at Mississippi State on Thursday night in the opener of a two-game road trip.
Thompson Jr. played 30 minutes after missing the past six games with a foot injury. He was 9-for-16 from the field and scored in double figures for the 22nd time in 34 career appearances.
It was his second career 20-point game. Thompson Jr. fell just short of his career high, a 23-point effort at UCLA on March 5, 2016.
Freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin had 12 points and senior center Cheikh N'diaye added a career-high 10 for OSU (3-5). N'daiye's previous best was nine points against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 11 in OSU's season opener.
Sophomore center Drew Eubanks grabbed 12 rebounds and scored five points.
The Bulldogs (5-2) led for most of the game and closed the first half on a 14-4 run to assume a 45-19 intermission advantage. The Beavers did not get closer than 17 points thereafter, at 68-51 with 3:45 to play and again with one second remaining on a 3-point play by junior guard Ronnie Stacy.
OSU was without sophomore forward Tres Tinkle, its leading scorer (20.2 ppg), for the second game. He sustained a wrist injury against Fresno State on Nov. 25 and is out for an undetermined length of time.
The Beavers conclude the road trip at Charlotte at 4 p.m. on Saturday in a radio-only contest. Their next home game is against Savannah State at 3 p.m. on Dec. 11. It will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
