Beavers to Welcome Back Olympian, Devery Karz, at Orange & Black Regatta
November 08, 2016 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State rowing programs will hold the annual Orange & Black Regatta this Saturday, concluding with a speech from Rio Olympian, Devery Karz, an OSU rowing alum.
The event which began nine years ago as a women's team workout has grown over the years. The men's program joined the event and last year an alumni sprint race was added to the festivities.
"This is the one time of the year the community can see us race in Corvallis," head women's rowing coach Emily Ford said."
This weekend's event is made special by the return of Karz, who raced for the U.S. Rowing Team at the Rio Olympics last summer.
"We're really proud of Devery and welcome all of our friends, family and fans to join us on Saturday. It's a great opportunity for anyone in the community to hear her speak and a great chance for people to bring their kids out to meet an Olympian."
Fourteen shells will hit the water Saturday morning for the 6,000 meter race. The crews will row downstream to the north on the Willamette River before turning around to race back upriver to the finish line at the OSU Boathouse dock. The crews, which will be split into two teams of Orange and Black, will race against the clock, rather than in a head-to-head style race, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
"The Orange and Black is a lot of fun for our team and I hope to see a bunch of our alumni in town this weekend," men's rowing head coach Gabe Winkler.
The regatta is a free event with free parking at the OSU Boathouse. The boathouse is also within walking distance of downtown Corvallis and the Farmer's Market. Lunch will be available, for a fee, following the alumni row, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.
To RSVP for lunch at the event go to www.osufoundation.org/orange_black_regatta. The deadline to RSVP for lunch is Thursday at 12 p.m.
The best areas for fans to view the regatta are 1) from the shore at the OSU Boathouse, 2) from the landing at North Riverfront Park on the west side of the Willamette River below The Spaghetti Factory, and 3) from the Harrison Street Bridge.
