Beavers’ to Race at Head of the Charles
October 20, 2016 | Men's Rowing
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's rowing team begins the 2016 fall season Sunday at the 52nd annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. It is the first time the Beavers have raced at the HOCR since 2012.
"It is an honor to be selected to be at the Head of the Charles," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "We aim to represent the Oregon State rowing program well. This will be fun for the guys to be on such a big stage with a huge crowd."
The Head of the Charles is the world's largest two-day rowing event, attracting more than 11,000 participants from around the world in 56 different race events.
OSU is sending a single Varsity 4+ boat, coxed by freshman Ben Garrison that will compete in the Championship Men's Fours category. The Beavers' crew will be powered by senior Frank Horpel and juniors Baxter Call, Neall Koetje and Jesse Maritz.
"Coxing will be really important, steering and passing other boats must be handled properly, it's really a coxswain's race. Ben (Garrison) has been there a couple times and his experience will help him handle the intensity."
Coincidentally, the Corvallis Rowing Club (which shares the OSU Boathousewith the Beavers) will have it's Master's members racing in the 70+ category, to try and defend their title.
COURSE: The 3-mile head race course takes place on the Charles River. The course runs upstream from Boston University Boathouse to Christian Herter Park.
RACE TIME: The Beavers will take the water at 1:48 p.m. ET, on Sunday.
