
Softball Q&A: Riley Gregoire

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In the days leading up to the 2016 season, OSUBeavers.com will help you get to know the 2016 Oregon State softball team a little better with some Q&A sessions. Featured in today's Q&A is freshman utility player Riley Gregoire.
A native of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Gregoire was a first-team all-league selection for her softball team all four years at Bainbridge High School. Gregoire was an all-area selection her last three years of high school, and was also a four-time all-league selection in soccer.
What is your favorite thing about being part of the program?
Having the chance to be coached by Laura Berg.
When did you know you wanted to play at Oregon State?
When I first stepped on campus.
How would you best describe the coaching staff?
Dedicated.
What trip are you most looking forward to this season?
The UCLA trip.
Does the number you wear have any significance? If so, what is it?
22 is significant because I was No. 2 for select and really liked the number, and my grandpa also wore No. 22 when he played football.
What's the one rule you would change in softball?
The “drop third strike” rule.
If you could play any other position for one day, what would it be and why?
Catcher, because I played that position when I was younger and would like to see if I would do well.
What is your favorite sport to attend or watch outside of softball? Why?
Football. My family is a big football family, so I always grew up with football on the TV.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to U.S. President or political office?
Bev Miller.
Which of your teammates would be most likely to be a comedian?
Madison Anthony.
Which teammate would be most likely to be a coach one day?
Taylor Cotton.
What are your hobbies outside of playing softball?
Playing soccer.
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
My mom always talked about her experience in marketing. I've always wanted to go into that field!
When did you start playing softball and how did you get your start playing?
I started playing when I was four years old, when my mom signed me up.
What sets softball apart from the other sports you enjoy?
The mental game, and the “game within the game”.
What advice would you give to a young athlete who has aspirations of playing sports at the collegiate level?
Always believe in yourself!
Do you remember your first home run? If so, describe it.
My first home run was actually an inside-the-park home run when I was in sixth grade. I hit a ball all the way to the fence. I ran around the bases and beat the tag at home.
