September 01, 2015 | Women's Basketball
MAESTRE, Italy - The Oregon State women's basketball team moved to 3-0 on its Italy trip, defeating Umana Reyer Venezia 67-51 Tuesday evening in Maestre.
“This was another good test for us,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “It's a good experience for us to play against a smart, savvy opponent like this. The first quarter was beautiful for us. We battled a little fatigue tonight, but we dug deep and we found our rhythm. It was a good night for us and I think we grew a lot.”
Oregon State hit on 46 percent of its shots in the game, while holding its opponent to 33 percent shooting. Senior Jamie Weisner led the way, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor and knocking down six free throws on her way to a 20-point performance. She also pulled down nine rebounds.
Junior Gabriella Hanson hit seven of her 14 shot attempts to finish with 18 points and seven boards, as she played in front of her father and grandfather, who made the trip down from Sweden to watch the game.
“It was really special for them to come watch the game,” Hanson said. “They both love Beaver basketball so they were both excited to be here.”
Junior Sydney Wiese finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, and senior Deven Hunter pulled down seven boards.
Oregon State used a 10-0 first quarter run to jump out to an early 16-6 lead. The Beavers would continue to extend the advantage from there, ending the first quarter up 27-12. The second quarter would yield more of the same, as OSU would go ahead 33-15, before taking a 20-point advantage into the intermission at 44-24.
Reyer would battle back in the second half, but the Beavers remained in control throughout the final 20 minutes, taking the win by 16 points.
“I think this is the best team we've played so far,” Hanson said. “They were very smart and very physical. This was a good preparation for our season coming up.”
Reyer Venezia plays in Serie A, Italy's top league, and made the semifinals of last season's Italian League playoffs.
Oregon State's game against ASD Gaes Basket, originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled. The Beavers will now play Thursday against Edelweiss Fassi Albino at 7:45 p.m. (10:45 a.m. Pacific Time). For updates throughout the tour, follow @OregonStateWBB on twitter.
