OSU Volleyball Set for Orange and Black Scrimmage
August 19, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
The event is open to the public, and all who attend will be admitted free. Players will be available following the conclusion of the scrimmage for an autograph opportunity.
"Thus far we've had a very good fall camp," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "People have worked extremely hard. We just started first unit versus second unit this week, so at this point it's a matter of defining roles, knowing where people are and getting comfortable in different rotations and formations next to each other. We're looking forward to our scrimmage on Friday night. It's always great to play in front of a crowd, put uniforms on, have officials and go at it."
The scrimmage will last for four sets, with the first two sets played between the evenly-balanced Orange and Black squads to 25 points. The latter two sets will be contested between the first and second units, with the third and fourth sets played to 25 and 15 points, respectively.
Special events taking place as part of Friday's festivities include a halftime performance by the Mini Beavs cheerleaders, as well as another scrimmage between members of Mini Beavs Volleyball Camp following OSU's scrimmage.
13 players - nine letterwinners, four redshirt freshmen - return from OSU's 2014 Sweet 16 squad and are joined by three newcomers for a 2015 roster of 16 athletes.
Among the letterwinners returning are senior defensive specialist/libero Darby Reeder, who set the program's single-season digs record last season (614), as well as third-team All-American and 2014 Pac-12 and AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year outside hitter Mary-Kate Marshall.
"We're also tapering a little bit," Liskevych said. "We want to be very rested for both the scrimmage and for the upcoming competition in Hawai'i. We need to make sure we're in real good physical, mental and emotional form going in to both the scrimmage and in to our first competition next week."
Following the scrimmage, the Oregon State volleyball team will return to action with its season opener against the Wichita State Shockers on Friday, Aug. 28 at 4:30 p.m. HT (7:30 p.m. PT) as part of a tournament in Honolulu. The Beavers open their home slate on Thursday, Sept. 24 with a 7 p.m. PT Civil War matchup versus the Oregon Ducks.
