Where Are They Now - Becky Defoe
July 02, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
For our fourth edition of “Where Are They Now” we will be looking at the class of 2013. The lone senior, Becky Defoe, came to OSU from Summit High School in Bend, Ore., after having never played club volleyball, a rarity for the sport. The most decorated defensive player in OSU history, she set the school record for career digs with 2,029 and is still ranked in the top 10 in Pac-12 history. She set numerous other digging records in her four years as the starting libero for the Beavs. She was also the team captain for her junior and senior seasons.
Here is a look into her current life as narrated by Becky Defoe…
I can't believe it's been a year since I graduated!
I started off the summer coaching high school camps all over the northwest. As much as I hate spending monotonous hours driving across Oregon and Washington highways, I had a lot of fun with the different teams. It's always exciting to see the up and coming players working their tails off at skills camp. I also got to check a trip off my bucket list when I was sent to Alaska for a stretch of camps. We were there for almost two weeks, (Anchorage for the first week then Kenai for the rest) and had enough time off to go salmon fishing, moose chasing, hiking (small) mountains, and watch the sun set at the ridiculous hour of 11 p.m.
After that I started working for my dad building a couple houses, where I rediscovered a few things I learned before I left for college: 1) I love framing; and 2) I hate siding. Framing is fun because it's simple enough without being easy. It takes a lot of work to put together and raise the walls of a two-story house with only two people, but when you break it down the process is reasonably straight-forward. Siding, on the other hand, is tedious and requires constant measuring, and cutting, and leveling, and straightening, and nailing etc… To be fair though, the wooden box does tend to look a bit more like a house when you add siding.
Aside from working, I made time to catch a few of the OSU Volleyball games when the Beavers played at home. I can't say enough how proud I am of how everyone played this past year. It was a great season, and a well-deserved sendoff for the seniors.
I have also been able to go on a few hunting and fishing trips here in Oregon. The most recent of which was a very successful fishing trip to the Snake River. My family may have beaten me in number of fish caught, but I definitely hold the record for largest!
Well that pretty much brings us to now. Since my Dad and I have all but finished the latest house, it looks like it's time for me to find a “real job” which basically means I have to use my Biology degree for something other than a wall hanger. Until then, I'll be busy with the finishing touches of Mariah's (my younger sister) wedding preparations and enjoying Rodeo season. I'm also looking forward to coaching at OSU camps again this July! As always… Go Beavs!!
