Beavers Finish 21st at IRA Championships
May 31, 2015 | Men's Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Oregon State men's rowing team finished the season with its best racing of the weekend at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships on Sunday. OSU's Varsity 8 crew rowed to 21st overall while the Beavers' Second Varsity and Third Varsity boats earned top 20 finishes.
“We saved our best races for the final day, every boat finished well in their respective finals,” interim head coach Gabe Winkler said. “It's hard to see this group of seniors go. They are a great bunch of guys. But looking at how the JV and 3V rowed today, we have some hungry young guys for the future.”
The Beavers' Varsity 8 crew raced in the middle of the field of the Fourth Final. Syracuse pushed away from the pack for the win with a time of 5:45.101 while OSU battled Drexel and George Washington for second through fourth. GW couldn't hold the pace while the Beavers and Dragons went bow to bow all the way to the finish line. Drexel outraced OSU finishing two-tenths ahead of the Beavers with a time of 5-minutes, 47.671-second to OSU's 5:47.880.
Oregon State's Third Varsity 8, comprised of a combination of rowers from the 3V8 and Freshman 8 that teamed up at Pac-12 Championships, registered the Beavers' best overall finish at IRA's. The Orange and Black crew of Alec Martin, Sasha Kosek, Austin Erickson, Jordan Zielinski, Max Cantrell, Michael Jagielski, Rafael Gorriarán, Callum Davies and coxed by Heather Thompson, raced at the front of the pack with Syracuse throughout the 2,000-meter race. The Orange had just a bit too much gas for the Beavers finishing less than a second ahead, 5:54.320-5:55.001. The Beavers, who finished second in the Third Final, were 15th place overall.
In the Second Varsity 8, the Beavers raced to an 18th overall finish crossing in sixth place in the Third Final. Columbia 2V8 came in first with a time of 5:515.099 with the field close behind. OSU found itself in a battle for fifth with Hobart College. The Statesmen came out ahead by a nose with a time of 5:59.755 to the Beavers' 5:59.806.
Seniors Ben Augeri (2V8), Aidan Daly-Jensen (V8), Clark Fisher (2V8), Martin Forde (V8), Taylor Heen (2V8), Henry Prosser (V8), Eric Sumner (V8) and Kyle Wilkins (V8) raced for the final time in their collegiate careers Sunday. In addition, senior Nick Aerne, who did not race this weekend, has completed his eligibility.
