Beavers End Trip To No. 12 ASU
March 15, 2015 | Baseball
PHOENIX – The Oregon State baseball team dropped the series finale to No. 12 Arizona State, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The teams were tied at four entering the eighth inning but the Sun Devils took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Joey Bielek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and no outs. ASU ended up with two more runs in the inning for the three-run lead.
Jeff Hendrix, Kyle Nobach and Caleb Hamilton all had two hits in the loss.
The teams traded runs through the first four innings. ASU (12-6 overall, 2-1 Pac-12 Conference) scored a solo run in the first before OSU (15-5, 1-2) answered back with a run in each of the third and fourth innings – courtesy of groundouts by Trever Morrison and Dane Lund, respectively.
The Sun Devils' Brian Serven drove in a run in the home half of the fourth, also on a groundout, to even the game at two.
OSU loaded the bases in the fifth but could not manage a run against reliever Jordan Aboites. The sixth inning, however, was a different story. Kyle Nobach doubled to open the inning, and moved to third when Dane Lund reached on a bunt single. Caleb Hamilton drove a 1-1 pitch to right center for a run-scoring single, pushing OSU to a 3-2 lead.
Hamilton was out as part of a double play when the next batter, Christian Donahue, grounded out to short, but that enabled Lund to come in from third for the Beavers' fourth run of the game.
The Sun Devils, however, tied the score on a two-run, two-out single by Colby Woodmansee in the bottom half of the seventh.
The Beavers chased Arizona State starter Brett Lilek after four innings, but he did not figure in the decision. The left-hander scattered five hits and two runs.
Travis Eckert started for Oregon State and did not figure in the decision after allowing four hits and four runs - three earned – in 6 2/3 innings of work.
The loss went to reliever Luke Heimlich, who dropped to 0-2 on the year after allowing two hits and two runs in 1/3 of an inning. The win went to Aboites, who improved to 1-2.
The Beavers return home to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for a 7:05 p.m. PT first pitch against Washington State Friday night. Tickets remain for the game and the series and can be purchased by visiting BeaverTickets.com.
The game is a part of the Northwest Rivalry Series, presented by Alaska.
