CORVALLIS, Ore. - A first half offensive explosion from junior Jamie Weisner helped carry the No. 7/7 Oregon State women's basketball team to a 82-64 win over UCLA Monday evening at Gill Coliseum.
Weisner finished with 18 points, all of which came in the first half, as she became the 18th player in Oregon State history to reach the 1,000 career point mark. Weisner finished the game shooting 5-for-11 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the free throw line to lead five Beavers in double-figures. She also tallied seven rebounds.
Fellow junior Ruth Hamblin notched her ninth double-double of the season, as she finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior Ali Gibson also reached a career milestone, as she scored five points to break into the top-10 on Oregon State's career list with 1,155.
“This was another really strong performance by our team tonight,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “I was really proud of our effort, especially defensively, playing against the athletes UCLA has. We did a really good job of keeping them out of transition and limiting them to a half-court game. I thought UCLA played a good game. They played us well defensively, and they just kept coming. I was proud of our team for answering all of their runs. We had another great crowd tonight, and it was another good win for us.”
The win gave Oregon State its first ever season-sweep of the Southern California schools, as the Beavers continued to build on the best start in school history, moving to 20-1 on the season and 10-0 in Pac-12 play. The 2014-15 campaign is the 11th 20-win season in Oregon State history.
Sophomore Sydney Wiese finished with 13 points and dished out nine of Oregon State's 21 assists. All four of Wiese's baskets came from beyond the 3-point arc. Junior Deven Hunter recorded 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Gabriella Hanson tallied 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
As a team, Oregon State shot 46.6 percent 27-for-58 in the game, and 50 percent in the second half (13-for-26). UCLA (8-13, 4-6 Pac-12) hit on 40 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-for-60).
UCLA jumped out to an early five-point lead, but Weisner quickly erased the deficit by hitting back-to-back three-pointers to give Oregon State a 10-9 advantage. The Beavers would proceed to extend the lead from there, going ahead 29-17 with five minutes remaining in the opening frame. OSU would stretch the lead to as many as 14, before taking a 42-31 edge into the intermission.
Weisner dominated the first half, scoring 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor. Hamblin followed her with eight points and six rebounds.
The Beaver defense clamped down to open the second half, holding the Bruins to just a single made field goal in the first eight minutes of the closing frame, helping OSU extend the lead to 20 points. Oregon State would not look back from there, leading by as many as 22, before taking the win by 18 points.
The Beavers head north this week, as they take on Washington Friday in Seattle. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
