SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 7/7 Oregon State women's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Friday evening, dropping a tightly contested game 76-67 to Washington in Seattle.
The game was part of the Northwest Rivalry Series, presented by Alaska Airlines.
“Washington played really well tonight,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “They're a tough team to guard and they did a nice job defensively. We were off our game a little bit offensively, but you have to give them credit for that. I love the way we fought tonight. This team has so much heart and we saw that today.”
The defeat snapped a 10-game Oregon State (20-2, 10-1 Pac-12) winning streak, which began at the start of Pac-12 play.
Junior Jamie Weisner led four Beavers in double-figures, scoring 17 points and pulling down eight rebounds, as she played in her home state. Sophomore Sydney Wiese hit four 3-pointers to move within four of tying Felicia Ragland's Oregon State career record. She finished with 16 points and four assists.
Senior Ali Gibson scored 15 points, moving up to ninth in Oregon State history with 1,170. Junior Ruth Hamblin finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Beavers played the game without the services of sophomore guard Gabriella Hanson.
Washington (17-6, 6-5) shot 46.6 percent in the contest and 40.0 percent from 3-point range.
The teams went back and forth early on, before the Beavers used a 13-2 run to take the lead 15-9. The Huskies would come back to tie the game at 17, but Wiese hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to give the advantage back to Oregon State. Washington would bounce back to retake the lead at 27-23. Gibson hit a three to tie the game at 31 in the final minute of the opening frame, but a buzzer-beater gave the Huskies a 34-31 edge heading into the intermission.
Gibson scored 13 points in the opening frame, shooting 6-for-12 from the field.
OSU didn't wait long to retake the lead in the second half, as Weisner hit a 3-pointer to tie things up before Hamblin knocked down a layup to give the Beavers the lead. The Huskies would surge back though, going ahead 43-38 four minutes into the closing frame.
Washington stretched the lead to 12 with 12 minutes remaining, the largest advantage of the contest. Oregon State made a push to cut the advantage to three with eight minutes to play. The Huskies returned the lead to double-figures, with six minutes to go, but again the Beavers made bounced back, getting within striking distance at 71-65 with 3:39 left. Oregon State's comeback bid would come up short, however, as the Huskies took the win by nine.
The Beavers will head to the Palouse Sunday to take on Washington State.
