Beavers Battle, Fall to Stanford
February 27, 2015 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS - Junior Deven Hunter recorded her seventh career double-double, but the No. 7/7 Oregon State women's basketball team could not overcome a strong No. 19/19 Stanford squad, as the Cardinal took the victory 69-58 Thursday evening in front of 6,157 at Gill Coliseum.
Hunter finished with 18 points and 14 boards, notching her fourth double-double of the season. Fellow junior Jamie Weisner tallied 18 points, as she finished in double-figures for the eighth time in her last nine games. Hunter shot 7-for-13 in the contest, while Weisner went 7-for-14.
“Stanford played a great game tonight,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “They had nothing to lose and they played that way. They hit bigs shots and they had a good defensive plan. It never felt like we got comfortable in that game. This was a unique situation in many ways.”
The loss snapped a 22-game Oregon State home winning streak, which dated back to Dec. 29, 2013.
The Beavers held a 47-40 advantage on rebounds in the game, led by junior Ruth Hamblin with 12 boards. Sophomore Sydney Wiese and senior Ali Gibson finished with seven points apiece.
The teams went back and forth early on. Stanford jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Weisner hit a three to get the Beavers on the board. The defenses would clamp down for the next few minutes, as the Cardinal took a 7-5 lead into the first media timeout. Stanford would extend the lead to nine at 26-17 with eight minutes left in the first half. The Beavers would roar back with an offensive outburst of their own, as Weisner scored eight-straight Beaver points to bring OSU within three. The teams would battle back and forth from there, before Oregon State scored the final five points of the half to enter the break trailing by just one at 34-33.
Weisner led the way with 15 first half points. Hunter scored eight points to go with six boards, while Hamblin pulled down eight rebounds.
The Cardinal was able to rebuild its lead early in the second half, going ahead by nine points six minutes into the closing frame. Oregon State would make a late push, but was unable to overcome the advantage, falling by 11 points.
“In the end, this is one game and now it's over,” Rueck said. “We'll move on, just live we have in the past. Now it's all about the next possession. We will learn from this.”
The Beavers are back in action Saturday against No. 24 California. They can clinch the Pac-12 regular season title outright with a win over the Golden Bears or a loss by Arizona State. The Sun Devils are next in action Friday against Utah.
