Payton II Sets Record In 66-62 Win Over Nevada
December 05, 2015 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior guard Gary Payton II shattered his father's consecutive-game steals record and Oregon State held off Nevada 66-62 on Saturday before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 4,891.
Payton II set the school record with 10:06 to play in the first half when he swiped an errant pass by Nevada's A.J. West. He finished with two and has two or more steals in every game this season.
He now has at least one theft in 38 consecutive games, breaking the OSU mark set by his father, former All-American Gary Payton, during the 1989 and 1990 seasons. The elder Payton was on hand to see his son break his long-standing record.
There were nine ties and 15 lead changes before the Beavers (6-1) closed it out to improve to 6-1 for the first time since the 2011-12 season, and for just the third time in his century.
Payton II had 16 points and eight rebounds and freshman guard Stephen Thompson Jr. and senior guard Malcolm Duvivier added 11 points apiece for the Beavers, who bounced back from a Nov. 24 loss to Valparaiso to sweep Loyola Marymount and the Wolf Pack (5-3) at home this week.
Thompson Jr. scored all of his points in the second half and his runner with 5:57 remaining gave the Beavers the lead for good at 54-53. Nevada cut the lead to 56-55 with 5:04 remaining and had one chance to go ahead, but couldn't convert and senior forward Olaf Schaftenaar restored a three-point lead (58-55) with a layup with 4:10 remaining,
Thompson Jr. added two free throws with 3:05 to play for a 60-55 lead and then hit a jumper with 2:17 left and a 3-pointer with 1:47 to play that gave OSU an insurmountable 65-59 lead.
Nevada had one possession to tie but it missed a 3-pointer and a follow shot. Schaftenaar got the rebound and made a free throw with 27 seconds to play for a two-possession edge the Beavers protected.
Thompson Jr. scored nine points in the final 5:57 to enable the Beavers to hold on despite foul trouble for Payton II, who played only 32 minutes and missed three minutes down the stretch with four fouls.
Senior forward Jarmal Reid had seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 22 minutes in his first appearance of the season. He missed the first six games with a foot injury.
It was OSU's first win over Nevada since the 1923 season; the Wolf Pack had won five in a row, including three straight in Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers resume action on Dec. 12 with a 5 p.m. matchup against Kansas at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. OSU's second matchup with the Jayhawks in the past four seasons will be televised by ESPN2.
OSU's next game in Oregon is a Dec. 18 matchup with Cal State-Fullerton in the Far West Classic Invite at the Moda Center in Portland. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and it will be televised by Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 Oregon.
