Bresser advances to Midlands semis

Evanston, Ill. – Sophomore Ronnie Bresser advanced to the semifinals in the 125-pound weight class on Tuesday to lead the Oregon State wrestling team in the opening day of the 53rd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University.
Bresser won three matches to reach the Final Four, and improved his record to 15-4. He will face Tim Lambert of Nebraska on Wednesday; Bresser defeated Lambert 4-3 at the Northeast Duals back on Nov. 15.
Sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi was stunned 6-5 by Tanner Hall of Arizona State in their quarterfinal bout. Hall scored an escape and a takedown in the final seconds to hand Dhesi his first loss of the season after 14 consecutive wins.
Dhesi dropped to the consolation quarterfinals and can still finish third. Two of his three wins on Tuesday were by fall. He will face Joseph Fagiano of Cal Baptist on Wednesday.
The Beavers were in sixth place with 41 points, just 1.5 points behind fifth-place Northwestern. Iowa (96) holds a commanding 18-point lead over Nebraska (78) in the race for the team title, followed by Rutgers (62), North Carolina (49.5), Northwestern and the Beavers.
Competition resumes at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The first-, third- and fifth-place matches begin at 6 p.m. and will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
Kegan Calkins (125), Joey Palmer (133), Joey Delgado (149), Seth Thomas (165) and Corey Griego (184) joined Dhesi in the consolation quarterfinals. Calkins and Thomas went 2-1, Palmer, Delgado and Griego 3-1.
Calkins will face Sam McCabe of Rutgers in his first match on Wednesday. Palmer goes against Mason Beckman of Lehigh; Delgado meets Michael Kemerer of Iowa; Thomas faces Connor Brennan of Rider and Griego meets Pete Renda of North Carolina.
Tyler Chay (174) and Cody Crawford (197) each went 2-2 and were eliminated. Jack Hathaway (141) and Ali Alshujery (174) went 1-2 and were eliminated. Ronnie Stevens (133), Jared Reis (141), Abraham Rodriguez (157) and Tyler Chay (174) lost twice and were eliminated.
The unranked Beavers (3-3) will resume their dual-meet schedule on Jan. 7 against Michigan at the Joe Wells Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. The dual will honor the longtime Michigan assistant coach/OSU head coach, who died earlier this year.
They conclude the road trip at Central Michigan on Jan. 9. Their next home dual is Jan. 16 against Wyoming.
