Beavers Dominate Warriors in Exhibition Matchup
November 09, 2015 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – The No. 9/10 Oregon State women's basketball team posted a dominating performance in Sunday's exhibition contest, recording a 98-48 victory over Corban at Gill Coliseum.
“It was great to be back in Gill Coliseum,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “We've been waiting to be back here for a long time. We saw a lot of great things today. I thought Corban came in here with a plan. Late in the first quarter I thought we gained some traction defensively, and I liked the way we defended from there on. Offensively I thought we executed well. We knew we would have an advantage in the post and I thought we did well to capitalize on that.”
The Beavers, who will open their regular season Friday against Longwood, shot 53.8 percent in the contest (43-for-80), compared to 25.8 percent for the Warriors (16-for-62).
Sophomore Marie Gulich led the Beavers with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting and finished with seven rebounds. Senior Ruth Hamblin finished 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior Gabriella Hanson recorded 11 points and six boards.
Senior Jamie Weisner filled the stat-sheet yet again, scoring 12 points to go with eight rebounds. Junior Sydney Wiese rounded out the group of five Beavers in double-figures, ending the day with 10 points.
Freshmen Taylor Kalmer and Katie McWilliams both made their Gill Coliseum debuts in the game. Kalmer hit her first shot of the afternoon on her way to nine points, and McWilliams dished out four assists. Sophomore Breanna Brown played 12 minutes as she made her return from a redshirt season, tallying seven points and six boards.
Overall, the Beavers out-rebounded Corban 60-26 and Oregon State finished the game with 27 assists.
The contest was close early on, but the Beavers ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take control at the first intermission by a score of 29-18. Oregon State would continue to pull away early in the second quarter, extending the lead to 19 midway through the frame. The Beavers proceeded to stretch the advantage to 51-22 at the break, outscoring Corban 22-4 in the second quarter.
Oregon State continued to dominate throughout the second half, taking a 77-28 lead to end the third quarter on its way to the 50-point win.
