The Schedule: Oregon State will face an exciting 2015-16 schedule this season, including a home game against Tennessee on Dec. 19 (tickets here). The Beavers will follow that up with a trip to Notre Dame on Dec. 28. Pac-12 play opens on Jan. 2 with a trip to Los Angeles, before Oregon State plays in back-to-back Civil War games on Jan. 8 (Corvallis) and Jan. 10 (Eugene).
The Rankings: Oregon State enters the 2015-16 season with the highest season-opening rankings in school history. The Beavers will begin the year at No. 9 in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches' Poll and at No. 10 in the AP Rankings. OSU has also been selected by both the Pac-12 coaches and media to repeat as conference champions.
Individual Recognition: Sydney Wiese and Ruth Hamblin both earned spots on the Pac-12 Preseason First Team, which was voted on by the conferences' media earlier this week. Hamblin was also selected as the No. 13 player in the nation by ESPNW, while Wiese was tabbed as the No. 23 player. Jamie Weisner joined Wiese and Hamblin as All-Pac-12 selections last season.
What's New: The Beavers bring a trio of freshmen into the upcoming season. Katie McWilliams hails from Salem, Ore., where she was a two-time all-state honoree, and won the Oregon Sports Award for Best Prep Basketball Player. Taylor Kalmer makes her way up to Corvallis from Chandler, Ariz., where she attended Corona Del Sol High School. Kalmer averaged 18.7 points per game in her senior year, and started all four years at point guard. Tarea Green went to Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, Ore. She holds Hillsboro High records for points and rebounds in a season.
Italian Summer: Oregon State took part in an international tour this summer, heading to Italy to take in the culture and play some basketball. The 10-day trip featured stops in Rome, Florence, Venice and Como, as well of four basketball games against professional Italian squads (all four won by the Beavers).
So International: Several Beavers got experience with their national teams this summer. Ruth Hamblin (Canada) and Sydney Wiese (USA) both traveled to South Korea in June to take part in the World University Games, an Olympic-style event aimed at college athletes. Hamblin and Wiese found themseleves on opposite ends of the floor in the Gold Medal Game, as Wiese and Team USA defeated Canada to take the event's top prize. Meanwhile, Scott Rueck was busy serving as an assistant coach for the US Pan-American Games squad, helping the team earn a silver medal. Rueck also found himself in an unfamiliar position when Team USA faced former Beaver Ali Gibson and Puerto Rico.
Notable Rules Changes:
- Games will be played in four 10-minute quarters, rather than two 20-minute halves
- Teams will be in the bonus after their opponent reaches five personal fouls in a quarter. From that point on, the team will shoot two free throws for every defensive or loose-ball foul. There is no longer a “1-and-1” bonus.
- If a team calls a timeout after a made basket in the final minute of the second half or overtime, that team may inbound the ball from the frontcourt rather than the baseline.
