SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to the No. 4 Washington Huskies in three sets at the Alaska Airlines Arena on Wednesday night in a Northwest Rivalry Series match, presented by Alaska Airlines.
In the third leg of a four-match road swing, OSU (4-13, 2-5 Pac-12) was out-hit, .295-.034, by the fourth-ranked Huskies (16-1, 6-1 Pac-12) en route to set scores of 25-13, 25-22 and 25-20. OSU nearly matched the Huskies in total blocks (7.0-7.5), but the Beavers committed five more attack errors (19-14), while burying 20 fewer kills (42-22).
“We can't hit those low types of numbers as attackers and compete against good teams,” Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych. “We did not pass well, and our outsides just did not attack – we just made a lot of miscues. Too many people had off-matches. We did not play as well as we were capable of tonight.”
OSU was successful in service against Washington, recording six aces with only five errors as opposed to five aces and 11 errors for the Huskies. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Kory Cheshire led the Beavers in service with a pair of aces, while redshirt junior outside hitter Katelyn Driscoll had a team-high seven kills.
“Our strength tonight was our great serving, which kept them off-balance,” Liskevych said. “That was as good as we've served against a tough team all season.”
OSU took its first lead in the first set at 5-4, but three errors helped Washington to a 5-0 run and 9-5 lead in the frame. From a 15-11 UW lead, the Huskies took 10 of the next 12 points to win the opening frame, 25-13.
Washington flowed by also opening the second set with a 9-5 lead. The Huskies held the advantage up to a 17-14 score, when OSU went on a 4-0 run to capture its first lead of the set at 18-17. The two teams played to a tie at 21, but the Huskies closed with four of the last five points to go up 2-0 in the match with a 25-22 second set win.
After opening the third set with a 4-0 lead, the Huskies committed four consecutive errors and were aced by Cheshire as OSU grabbed a 5-4 advantage. The Beavers went down 11-8 in the frame, but went on a 7-1 run from that point to lead 15-12 at the media timeout. However, the Huskies came back to tie the set at 18 all, then closed with seven of the last nine points to close out the match with a 25-20 third set win.
The Oregon State volleyball team finishes off its four-match road swing on Friday with a match at Washington State. The Beavers are set to take on the Cougars at 5:30 p.m. PT.
