TUCSON, Ariz. – Cold-shooting Oregon State fell 57-34 to No. 6 Arizona on Friday night in a Pacific-12 Conference game at the McKale Center.
Junior forward Olaf Schaftenaar led the Beavers with eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Malcolm Duvivier added seven points and three assists and junior forward Jarmal Reid had seven points.
The Beavers (14-7, 5-4 Pac-12) hit 14 of 49 attempts (.286) as Arizona (20-2, 8-1) avenged a 58-56 loss to the Beavers in Corvallis on Jan. 11 to earn a split of the season series. OSU also could not get to the foul line as Arizona enjoyed a 16-5 edge in attempts and outscored the Beavers 13-3 from the line.
Arizona scored 90 points in a win over Oregon on Wednesday but was held to a season-low at home on Friday. OSU forced 16 turnovers and Arizona needed to make 5 of its last 6 shots to crack the 40-percent mark from the field. Arizona's two lowest-scoring games of the season were against the Beavers.
“Great effort, super-proud of the guys defensively,” OSU coach Wayne Tinkle said. “Especially in the first half, it was just like the game at home. We were playing the tempo we needed to play.
“We executed offensively for the most part , we got great looks [but] this game is about putting the ball in the basket and we didn't do that enough to put a little bit of heat on them.
“In the second half they climbed all over us, our two bigs got in foul trouble and we were a little smaller. We didn't compete on the glass and that's where they hurt us, with some putbacks that stretched the lead out,” as Arizona had an 11-6 margin in second-chance points.
“We're going to watch the video and be disappointed in our lack of execution, finishing plays and making shot when we were open,” Tinkle added. “But I'm going to focus on our effort.
“It's unbelievable to come into this environment and hold them under 60 points and to 40 percent shooting, I'll take that on the road,” in the toughest venue in the Pac-12. “We just need to get better performances offensively.”
It was the fewest points scored by the Beavers since an 82-35 loss at UCLA on Feb. 3, 2007. The school low in the modern era is 18, set in an 18-16 win at Stanford on Jan. 28, 1980.
OSU stayed with the Wildcats for the first 12 minutes and a tip-in by Payton II tied the game 13-13 with 7:45 remaining in the first half. However, the Beavers went ice-cold and would not score again and Arizona ripped off 11 unanswered points to take a 24-13 lead at intermission.
OSU drew within 24-17 with 17:08 to play on a basket by Daniel Gomis but the Beavers would get no closer. Arizona enjoyed a double-digit advantage for the final 13 minutes and scored the final five points to stretch its lead to a game-high 23 at the buzzer.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 play against Washington State at 7 p.m. Thursday at Gill Coliseum, where they are 12-0 this season. OSU defeated the Cougars 62-47 in Pullman on Jan. 17; the game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
OSU concludes its homestand against Washington at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. That game will be televised by Fox Sports 1.
