No. 18 Beavs Top No. 19 Drexel

Seattle, Wash. – The No. 18 Oregon State men's rowing team defeated No. 19 Drexel in two Varsity 8 races at the Husky Invitational on Saturday.
The first race between Oregon State and Drexel's Varsity 8's took place in the morning session. The Beavs gained a two seat lead during the first half of the race, but eventually broke away in the final sprint, recording a final time of 5:48.2. Drexel followed with a 5:52.7.
"It was exciting to see the Varsity 8 execute their races just like they have at practice” said Head Coach Steve Todd. “You always make a race plan and want to follow that plan, but often in the race other factors cause you to vary.”
In the afternoon session, the Varsity 8 took to the water again, facing Drexel as well as No. 3 Washington. The Beavs hung with the fast Husky Varsity off the start; it wasn't until midway when they Dawgs pulled away.
Oregon State maintained a strong lead over Drexel, holding off the Dragons' strong charge in the final sprint. The Beavs recorded a final time of 6:01.4, while Drexel followed with a 6:05.1. UW claimed first with a time of 5:51.7.
“Today, in both races the Varsity 8 raced exactly how they wanted to and that's a big step for them," said Todd.
Oregon State's Junior Varsity 8 struggled with Drexel's pace in both sessions, recording a 6:07.4 and a 6:14.3 on the day.
"The JV never found their stride today,” said Todd. “They know what to focus on before next week."
The Beavers are set to race Gonzaga next Saturday in Lake Vancouver, Wash.
