Reid Leads Beavers to Comeback Victory
December 31, 2014 | Men's Basketball
Junior forward Jarmal Reid scored 16 points off the bench on Tuesday as Oregon State concluded its nonconference schedule with a 76-64 comeback victory over UC Santa Barbara before a crowd of 4,803 at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (9-3) erased a 16-point first-half deficit and pulled away in the second half to improve to 8-0 at home. It's their best home start since a 10-0 run to begin the 1998-99 campaign.
Junior forward Olaf Schaftenaar and junior guard Gary Payton added 14 points each, junior guards Victor Robbins and Langston Morris-Walker had 11 apiece and sophomore guard Malcolm Duvivier added 10.
Payton added nine rebounds, five steals and two assists and Duvivier had five assists in a true team effort. The Beavers had six players in double figures.
“We are playing unselfish basketball,” Duvivier said. “We are moving the ball around, setting screens, and that opens so many people up. No one is worried about their own performance. We are trying to make plays for each other.”
The Beavers scored the first six points of the second half to take a 43-36 advantage and held on from there. The Gauchos rallied for a 47-47 tie with 12:44 remaining, but a Reid basket started a 7-0 run that gave the Beavers crucial separation.
A Payton 3-pointer established a 10-point lead (62-52) with 4:35 to play. Duvivier then nailed a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired coming out of a timeout to make it 65-54 with 3:40 remaining. OSU then hit 9 of 11 free throws in the closing 2:58 to lock it down.
“It was a great experience for our guys,” OSU coach Wayne Tinkle said. “I couldn't be more proud for the way they dug deep to find a way to win.
“It wasn't like a bunch of fluke things happened” to facilitate OSU's comeback. “We just dug in and played like we know we are capable of.
“We didn't settle offensively. We stayed in attack mode. That's good to have in our memory bank moving forward.”
The Gauchos (5-7) shot 60 percent in the first half and built a 16-point lead (26-10) with 8:55 to play before halftime. The Beavers flipped the switch at that point, however, and ran off 12 unanswered points to draw within 26-24 and
“We were contesting their shots, they were just knocking everything down,” Duvivier said of the Gauchos, who were 5-of-9 from deep and 14 of 23 overall in the first half. UCSB tailed off to 9 of 23 overall and 2 of 9 from deep in the second half.
“We just couldn't let that bring us down. We had to come out with intensity and pressure them. Once we started pressuring them and being more physical they got out of their rhythm.
“That helped us defensively. We all stuck together, pushed, and got that defensive fire and kept with it.”
The Beavers open Pacific-12 Conference play at Oregon on Saturday in a 5 p.m. game at Knight Arena in Eugene. It will be televised by ESPNU.
“It has to be one of the most exciting games of the year,” Duvivier said. “Everyone is pumped up. We have to prepare in practice and take that energy down there and show them what we are made of.”
OSU opens the home portion of its Pac-12 season against Arizona State at 6 p.m. on Jan. 8. It will be televised by Fox Sports 1.
