Beavers Dominate Wolves in Exhibition
November 10, 2014 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 20/21 Oregon State women's basketball team got its quest for back-to-back tournament appearance off to a strong start Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers shot 57.5 percent on their way to a 98-38 exhibition win over Western Oregon. Junior Jamie Weisner led the way with 25 points on 10-for-10 shooting, a field-goal percentage that would be an Oregon State record in a regular season game. The Clarkston, Wash. native also went 5-for-5 from three-point range, helping the Beavers shoot 45 percent (9-for-20) from downtown.
Weisner did most of her damage in the first half, scoring 20 points in the opening frame. She saw the floor sparingly in the second stanza, as she played just three of her 20 minutes after the intermission.
“I think we executed at a pretty high level at both ends of the floor,” said head coach Scott Rueck. “We were accurate in executing our system. Defensively, we kept them out of transition, which was something we were trying to do, and offensively we did a good job of playing inside-out. We had five scorers on the floor at all times, and we never relaxed. I think we put 40 great minutes together and kept our intensity up.”
Five Beavers scored in double-figures, matching Oregon State's 2013-14 season-high. Senior Ali Gibson came on strong in the second half, scoring eight of her 11 points in the closing frame. The Woodinville, Calif. native shot 5-for-6 on the day, and also added four assists. Junior Ruth Hamblin made her presence felt inside, recording a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kolbie Orum tallied 12 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks.
Freshman Marie Gülich excited Beaver fans on her Oregon State debut, scoring 10 points and pulling down six rebounds. She was joined by fellow newcomer Jen'Von'Ta Hill, who scored two points with a nice move in the paint, and also recorded a pair of assists, one of which was a perfectly placed pass over the top of the defense that led to an open Orum layup.
2013-14 All-Pac-12 selection Sydney Wiese scored all nine of her points from beyond the arc, hitting three of her seven attempts from long range. She also tied sophomore Gabriella Hanson with a game-high five assists. All 10 Beavers that saw playing time recorded at least one basket and at least two rebounds.
The Beavers also posted a dominant defensive effort, holding the Wolves under 30 percent shooting, a feat OSU accomplished seven times last season. Oregon State held a 49-27 advantage in rebounds.
The Beavers jumped on top right from the beginning, as Gibson, Wiese and Weisner knocked down three-straight long balls to open the game, part of 12 unanswered points to start the contest. Oregon State would not slow up from there, exploding out to a 54-21 halftime lead, as the team shot 68.8 percent (22-for-32) from the floor and 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from three-point range. Hamblin shot 5-for-7 in the opening stanza, recording 11 points, five boards, two blocks and a steal.
The second half featured more of the same, as Oregon State used a 16-0 run midway through the closing frame to out-score Western Oregon 44-17 in the period. The stingy OSU defense held the Wolves to 25 percent shooting in the closing 20 minutes, and did not allow Western Oregon to convert a three-point attempt.
The Beavers host their regular season opener on Friday, when they take on Portland at Gill Coliseum. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
