ROCHESTER, Mich. – Lila Toner officially joined the Oregon State volleyball team less than a week before the Beavers left for a 10-day trip to Michigan to open the 2013 season.
The freshman has already had a big impact on the team's season.
The Turkish native posted 21 kills to send the Beavers to a sweep of Oakland to close out the Golden Grizzlies Invitational Saturday night at the O'rena. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-13.
“We finished with very few unforced errors tonight,” said head coach Taras Liskevych, “and we really had great numbers.
“Lila's going to be pretty good,” Liskevych added. “She has some things to work on but she hits a very heavy ball. She's a gamer and is very competitive.”
Toner had 10 kills earlier in the day against Central Michigan but was the team's catalyst Saturday night, finishing with the team-leading 21. She finished with an impressive .450 hitting percentage on 41 attempts.
Toner's big night led the Beavers to a 3-0 record this season; it's the first time OSU is 3-0 since 2008.
She ended her weekend with 32 kills on the strength of a .371 hitting percentage.. Her efforts were rewarded as Toner was named the tournament's most valuable player. Laura Schaudt and Sara Almen were both named to the all-tournament team.
Almen finished with 27 kills on the weekend while Schaudt tallied 26.
The Beavers never trailed in Saturday night's victory and out-hit Oakland, .410 to .184. The Beavers hit better than .400 for the first time since posting a ,405 clip against DePaul on Aug. 26, 2011.
Based on that, Toner was far from the only Beaver to have a big night offensively. Schaudt pitched in with 12 kills while Arica Nassar and Almen had eight apiece.
Tayla Woods picked up assists on 42 of the Beavers' 53 kills overall, and she added eight digs and two assisted blocks to her stat line. Becky Defoe led the Beavers with 11 digs, while Amanda Brown, who tied for the team lead with 10 kills in the match against Central Michigan, paced OSU with five blocks against the Grizzlies.
OSU hit .500 in the first set and never looked back. The Beavers continued the offensive rush with a .312 clip in set two and .415 mark in set three. Oakland found itself at .258, .182 and .118, respectively.
The Beavers remain in the state of Michigan for three more matches next week. The first comes Wednesday at Eastern Michigan in a match that's scheduled to start at 4 p.m. PT.
