CORVALLIS, Ore. - Danny Hayes hit his first home run of the season and drove in four as the fourth-ranked Oregon State baseball team opened its series with Texas State with a 16-4 win Friday night at Goss Stadium.
Tyler Smith added three RBI on the strength of three hits as the Beavers won their 13th consecutive game to open the season. It is Oregon State's longest win streak since the 1986 club won 15 straight midway through the season.
"This was a great offensive effort against a club with a good pitching staff," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We had a couple big innings and got out to a great start."
Hayes hit a three-run home run in the first, his first round tripper of the season. He added a run-scoring single in the fourth during the Beavers' six-run inning. The two-hit effort was his fifth multi-hit game of the season and he now has two games with two or more RBI.
Smith, meanwhile, singled three times, and collected three RBI while scoring three runs. He extended his hit streak to seven games and has five multi-hit and three multi-RBI games this season.
All told, the Beavers finished with 16 hits. Ryan Barnes and Kavin Keyes all had two hits. Keyes drove in three while Davis and Barnes collected two RBI.
Oregon State batted around twice on the night, scoring six runs in the fourth and five in the seventh. The Beavers have batted around seven times in 13 games this season. They've done so twice in the same game this season Feb. 16 against Gonzaga and in Friday night's win.
Matt Boyd started and picked up his third win of the season after allowing six hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. The lefty walked one and struck out five in his fourth start of the season.
Kyle Finnegan took the loss for Texas State (5-8 overall) after allowing 10 hits and nine runs in five innings of work. He dropped to 1-1 on the year.
