TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior pitcher Tina Andreana had one of her best performances of the season Friday night, but a seventh-inning grand slam broke a 1-1 tie as No. 2 Arizona State defeated No. 23 Oregon State, 5-1, in the middle game of a three-game Pac-12 conference series at Farrington Stadium.
Andreana allowed just three hits, none of which were hit particularly hard. She only found trouble in the third after a walk and an error led to Arizona State's first run. She limited the damage to just the one unearned run, allowing the Beavers (23-8, 0-2) to tie the score in their next at-bat.
Sophomore Ashley Sanchez reached on a bunt single on the ensuing at-bat. A force at second eliminated Sanchez on Elizabeth Santana 's at-bat, but an errant throw to first allowed Gilmore to round third and score easily with the tying run.
The score stayed that way until the ASU seventh. The Sun Devils (33-3, 4-1) started the inning with a double, single and walk to load the bases. Reliever Marina Demore induced a fly to shallow left for the first out, but Cheyenne Coyle followed that at-bat with the game-winning grand slam to right center.
Andreana deftly navigated a potent lineup that had nobody hitting below .321 coming into action tonight. She went 5.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run while allowing just three hits and striking out three in getting the no-decision. She faced 23 batters and only threw 81 pitches.
The Beavers close the series with Arizona State tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks. Check local listings for more information.
