TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 23 Oregon State softball team completed its Pac-12 opening series with No. 2 Arizona State on Saturday, and the Sun Devils flexed their muscles with a seven-run fourth inning to break open a close game.
Trailing 4-0, the Beavers put two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning looking to cut into the Sun Devils' advantage. After two outs, senior Lea Cavestany singled to right field. It capped an outstanding week for Cavestany. She hit .500 (7-for-14) with three home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored. With third baseman Desiree Beltran up, she stole second.
Soon after, Beltran was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. It was the second time she was hit this series. The Beavers could not capitalize on the opportunity, and the Sun Devils were set to bust the game open with three homers and seven runs in the home half of the fourth to reach the final of 11-0.
The Beavers (23-9, 0-3) play their first home Pac-12 games of the season on Tuesday and Wednesday. OSU will host Stanford for a doubleheader at noon Tuesday and the series finale Wednesday, also at noon.
