Beavers have finished first in eight of the nine races they have competed in thus far during the spring
MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – The Oregon State women's crew team finished in first place four times out of a possible five races against Gonzaga, Sunday on Silver Lake in Washington.
The Beavers brought a total of six boats to Medical Lake, Wash., and a total of five of them finished ahead of Bulldog boats during five separate races.
The 'Beavs started off the morning taking three straight races against the Zags, finishing first in the Varsity 8+ (7:06.95), along with the second Varsity 8+ (7:11.30) and the Novice 8+ (7:17.05).
The lone blemish on OSU's day came in the Second Novice 8+/Fourth Varsity 8+ race where Gonzaga came out in front with a 7:33.09 time, nearly eight seconds in front of the Orange and Black's 7:41.29 pace.
It was back to their winning ways in the next and final race of the day as the Beavers two boats in the Varsity 4+ surged ahead of the Bulldogs, finishing 8:04.17 (A boat) and 8:07.60 (B boat) respectively, a long way ahead of the lone Gonzaga boat in the event at 8:29.30.
"Gonzaga put us under some pressure today. The good news is that we got a lot of wins and we did some things well along the way,” said Head Coach Emily Ford. “However, we definitely have some things to work out. We have spring break coming up this week, so we are looking forward to getting in some good strokes and to some great racing next weekend at Redwood Shores."
Before their first second place finish of the season on Sunday, Coach Ford's team had crossed the finish line in front of their opponents in six straight races, dating back to their clean sweep of the University of Victoria, earlier in the month. The Beavers have now won eight out of the total nine races they have taken the waters for this spring.
Next up for Oregon State will the Pac-12 Challenge as it closes out the month in Redwood Shores, Calif., March 30-31.
