BERKELEY, Calif. – Lila Toner and Tayla Woods each finished with double doubles and Kelsey Zimmerman set a career-high with 14 kills but the Oregon State volleyball team was edged in five by California Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
Set scores were 18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 22-25 and 8-15.
“What cost us in this match was in the fourth set, we missed three serves,” Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We need to do a better job of focusing on our serving in critical situations.
“This was the best our whole group of outside hitters has hit in a long time. We had some players with some really good numbers. I liked our mindset. We came out and we were aggressive. It was discouraging the way we played in the fifth set but it was really encouraging to see our mindset for the entire match.”
Toner led the Beavers with 18 kills and added 10 digs for her fourth double double of the season and first since Oct. 12 against UCLA. The freshman hit .239 on the day, and added three blocks.
Woods, meanwhile, recorded her sixth double double of the 2013 season with 57 assists – on 62 OSU kills, a 91.9 percentage - and 13 digs.
Zimmerman surpassed her previous high of 12 against Eastern Michigan earlier this year with a 14-kill effort against the Golden Bears. The redshirt junior totaled 35 attacks and finished with a .257 hitting percentage.
Overall, as a team, the Beavers (9-12 overall, 0-10 Pac-12 Conference) hit .206 compared to .199 for the Golden Bears. OSU's 62 kills were four shy of Cal's (13-6, 6-4) 66, and the Golden Bears attempted 181 attacks to 165 for Oregon State.
The teams tied in assists at 62 and the Beavers led the scoresheet with 74 digs to Cal's 66. The Golden Bears had the slight advantage in blocks, 13 to 12.
Arica Nassar, who finished with eight kills, led Oregon State with seven digs, including one solo. Amanda Brown, whose nine kills were fourth on the Beavers, also had four blocks to back up Nassar.
Becky Defoe paced the Beavers with 16 digs, while Darby Reeder had 15.
Cal's Adrienne Gehan led all players with 22 kills, while Lara Vukasovic was close behind with 18. Gehan also had a team-leading 18 digs while Lillian Schonewise led the Bears with eight blocks.
The Beavers won sets two and three, 25-21 and 25-20, respectively, by hitting .278 and .371. Cal hit .083 and .211 during those sets. In OSU's three losses, in sets one, four and five, the Beavers hit .056, .275 and minus-.111. Cal was at .211, .268 and .312 during those sets.
The match was tied 18 times during the five sets, with lead changes occurring seven times.
